The "favelas" (slums) are quite dangerous. Most of Rio is really
pretty safe when it comes to violent crime, although pickpocketing
and muggings do happen.
Ive been in Lima Peru several times and there were just a few
parts of town (downtoen being one) where it was....keep the camera
and jewelery outta sight..unless you want trouble
The downtown here is okay except at night. Keeping camera and
jewelry hidden is good anywhere. I think it's like any big city,
really. Muggings and pickpocketing happens in New York City
too!
Ive been to Atlanta, SF, Seattle, LA, Pittsburgh and Miami so
far and no probs... Maybe one day NY but just to visit. I cracked
up when i was in Miami about 8 years ago...alamo or national had a
lil sign in the rental car that said...the police will understand
if you run a red light at night if your car is being approached by
strangers hahah
Yeah, at night here in Rio, red lights are optional as well!
I've never been bothered in LA, NYC, DC, SF, Seattle, Vancouver,
Ottawa, Tijuana, Rio, or several European cities either.
Well, okay, one kid did try to grab my money out of my hand here
in Rio, but I elbowed him in the face and he ran away crying.
:)
Wow.. and theres a weird mix of the truly poor that youd feel
compassion for and then just thugs and pickpockets that you wouldnt
feel sorry for... Yeah Id heard that Rio had the extremely wealthy
and the extremely poor with almost no middle class, but I get the
impression that theres much more of a middle working class now
which helps society be more stable... is that true?
There is definitely a growing middle class here, which is just
what Brazil needs. The folks that I have been hanging out with this
week are all pretty typical middle class for here; not rich, but
they're not starving either.
The other group I don't feel sorry for are the shoeshine
scammers.
These are guys who work in teams -- one of them surreptitiously
squirts mustard on your shoes as he's walking by, and then moments
later a guy comes along to point it out and offer to clean your
shoes for a horribly inflated price. Bitches!
@Bishop You have no idea
how much I wish I was there in the middle of all of it. Somehow,
some way, before I go to that great LUG in the sky, I'm going down
there. Should have gone 7 years ago.

Some have commented on it being kinda dangerous there... Is it a "just stay in the safe areas" kinda place?
